Harpe baroque, harpe ancienne

Andrew Laurence King

Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz was a spanish guitarist, harpist, composer and priest, born before 1650. He is known to us through his educational work ´´Luz y Norte musical`` (light and north meaning directions for musicians) where he instructs how to play guitar, harp etc. He also presents theoretical texts and proposes compositions by himself or renowned colleagues of his. Madrid 1647. These compositions are baroque iberian dances (jácaras, folia, passacalles, canário etc.) In this video we are listening to a Xacaras or Jácaras.

During his life he visited South América (surely Peru) following the expedition of his patron count of Lemos. I heard this xacaras after a trip to Northern Argentina. I was impressed by the performance of The Harp Consort and Andrew Lawrence King. They are treating the music as a living entity, not as a museum piece. Their accent has no strict indication of space and time. I feel solemnity and a rite of earth in this piece. It took me some time to realise that it was spanish baroque music.

This is why i decided to use the music to present photos from arid Jujuy, the remote nothern state of Argentina which is forgotten by gods and time. Always bathed in light, wind, dust and silence it is mainly inhabited by andean Indians.

Enjoy.
